We are pleased to share that we have received great feedback about the Summer Workshop that was held for our children and young.
Over the span of five weeks, our young people participated in a series of both internal and external events, including:
- The Joint Berkshire Children in Care Council Fun Day: The joint Berkshire CiCC event marked a vibrant beginning to our summer programme, bringing together small groups of young people from each Berkshire care council, with the theme of “My Mind, My Body”.
- Future Focus: An interactive drop-in session facilitated by Slough Children First’s Recruitment team, where our young people were supported with employment support such as CV-writing and interview skills/preparation
- Chef it Up!: A cooking challenge designed to address their needs and provide practical skills for everyday life. During the session, all young people successfully made three meals within a £5 budget
- New Narrative: A workshop on redesigning social care with the input of the young people who use our services, co-led by our Principal Social Worker, giving our young people a voice in shaping the services that affect them.
- Rise Up!: The first youth-led participation conference, run by SBC’s Youth Voice Team, aimed to bring together young minds from various backgrounds to discuss critical topics, share innovative ideas, and build a network that fosters growth and positive change. Our young people actively engaged in discussions, contributing their unique perspectives and ideas on pressing issues.
- The Big Takeover Day: An event where our young people assumed leadership roles at Slough Children First, including chairing a board meeting with Lesley Hagger (SCF Independent Non-Executive Director), our Director of Operations, and our Head of HR & OD. They also engaged in policy development work, rebranded social care assessments and chaired a meeting. They also had the opportunity to have lunch with senior leaders, including the Director of Children’s Services/Chief Executive of Slough Children First
These experiences have had a positive impact on our young people, allowing them to have fun, while learning and boosting confidence and learning skills such as leadership.
