A foster carer with Slough Children’s Services Trust has been recognised nationally for the great work she has done supporting vulnerable children in Slough. Karen Embury was shortlisted in the Outstanding Contribution to Foster Care category at the Foster Carer Excellence Awards run by national charity, The Fostering Network.
Karen and her husband, Scott, have fostered many children over the last 16 years and have often helped out by opening up their home to children with next to no notice and taking in sibling groups as well.
Perhaps the most challenging was when they fostered a 15 year old who was three months pregnant. Karen supported and guided her through the pregnancy, keeping her calm and helping her to feel loved and secure. She became her birthing partner and was with her when she welcomed a new baby girl into the world.
“I feel humbled that I have been recognised for this award,” said Karen. “I am surrounded by phenomenal carers, all of whom change their lives to accommodate our children looked after. All I can do is say thanks for the award and accept the nomination on behalf of all of us.”
‘It is a fantastic achievement for Karen to be recognised at a national level for her outstanding contribution to fostering,” said Saima Arif who manages the Independent Fostering Agency at the Trust. “Over the years she has demonstrated a selfless commitment to the children in her care and we are privileged to have her in our team.”
Karen has also supported the office by sharing her experience at recruitment events and training and by sitting on panels. She is currently an active member of Slough’s Fostering Association and often takes the lead in organising days out for fostering households.
